The Power of Notescasting™

Notescast Support

1) Which iPods is Notescasting compatible with?

Notescasting is compatible with nearly every iPod sold today, including the iPod Classic, iPod Video, iPod Fifth Generation and iPod Nano 3rd and 4th Generation.  1st Generation and 2nd Generation Nanos are compatible with Notescasting, though they display text only.

2) Why are some of the pages “broken out” into multiple pages?

The iPod Notes feature currently limits each Notescast “page” to no more than 4KB in size.  Since this equates to roughly 1.5 pages of text, some topics are broken out into multiple sections.

3)  I’ve downloaded my files, but now I can’t find them.

If you downloaded the files but lost track of where to find them, perform a search with the following file name in order to locate them and copy the folders contained within to your iPod.  (Do not include the quotation marks)

 “*Notescast.*”

Review the Notescast Installation information section of our web site for additional installation information.

4)  Why am I getting an error message when trying to display my photos?

1) Sometimes the iPod will give you an error message indicating that it is “Unable to Display This Image.”  Try one of the following:

a) Scroll to another image which has previously displayed on your iPod just fine, and then return to the image which gave you the error message.  This will often fix the problem and is the equivalent of "Turning the iPod off and turning it back on."  If this doesn't work, proceed to b) below.

b) Reset your iPod by pressing the center click button and the “Menu” button at the same time for at least 6 seconds.  Your iPod will shut off momentarily before restarting.  You may need to turn your iPod off and then back on again by using the small slide button at the top of the iPod.

c) Resync your iPod using iTunes.  You should then be able to see your images.

In order for photos to be displayed in your Notescast title, they must reside in a folder titled "Photos" within the iPod "Notes" folder,  not the Notescast title folder.  If your photos are not appearing and you have restarted and resynced your iPod, it may be that you have  "miscopied" the Notescast "Photos" folder to the wrong location.  Make sure the Notescast "Photos" folder is copied only to the iPod "Notes" folder and not within the Notescast title folder.

Please note that there is also a “Photos” folder in the main menu section, along with the Notes folder.  Do not copy photos or any Notescast content to this folder.

See the Notescast Installation Instructions for additional details.

5)  Why are some words and phrases underlined in blue?

These are links to related topics or photos.  Click on the link to be taken to that link topic or to see the related photo.

6)  How do I return to where I left off when “returning” from a link, instead of returning to the top of the page?

The iPod's Notes application returns the user to the top of the page when returning from a link, so you’ll need to scroll down to continue reading.  It’s a constraint of the Notes feature within the iPod and, unfortunately, we have no control over it.

7)  During the download process, I receive a message asking, “Do you want to copy this file without encryption?

Some of the Notescast files you’re downloading may be encrypted.  You receive this message because the iPod doesn’t support encrypted files.  Simply select “Yes” and continue downloading your files.

8)  During the download process, I receive a message stating, “There is a folder with the same name as the file you specified.  Specify a different name.”

There is no need to specify a different name.  These files contain 0 bytes of data.  Simply choose to “Skip” the download of these files.

9)  Will my Notescast title work on both Windows and Mac formatted iPods?

Yes.  There is no need to download separate versions for Windows and Mac.

10)  What is the .DS_Store file?

The Desktop Services Store file is a file created by Apple’s Mac OS X operating system to store folder preferences, such as folder color backgrounds, etc.  It is a benign file, and the counterpart to Windows .ini files.  It is an automatic byproduct of the development process, and if you see this file, you can choose to delete it, if you wish.
